Physiological Benefits of
Meditation
- Ability
to rest deeply as measured by decreased metabolic rate,
lower cholesterol levels, lower heart rate, lower blood
pressure and a reduced workload of the heart.
- Levels
of stress associated chemicals such as cortisol and lactate
reduced. Higher
levels of DHEAS, which is associated with aging.
- Reduction
of free radicals, unstable oxygen molecules that can cause
tissue damage that are thought to be a major factor in many
diseases and aging.
- A
higher skin resistance, which means lower stress and anxiety
levels. Improved
flow of air going to the lungs, resulting in easier and more
relaxed breathing.
- Younger
biological age. With
standard measure for aging, long-term (5 or more years)
Transcendental Meditation practitioners measured an average
of 12 years younger than their chronological age.
