While
I have never been one to openly predict events based on my
dreams and intuitions, I would like to share a recent series of
dreams involving earthquakes where much damage within the
landscape of the dreams seems to result from the sinking of land
known in geological terms as liquefaction.
Liquefaction
is a special type of landslide in which soil or sediment
saturated by water turns from a solid to a liquid either during
or shortly after the ground shaking from an earthquake.
Layers of sediment saturated by the underground water
table can be buried as deeply as 20 meters.
Structures such as buildings sitting on top of soil that
liquefies sink, while an underground structure such as a propane
tank floats as the once solid sediment flows like water.
In some cases the ground softens and becomes a gelatinous
substance like quicksand.
In these
earthquake dreams I observed homes and buildings tilt downward
with some of these toppling over and crumbling to the ground
followed by great clouds of dust.
The earth cracked open and spewed water and debris
several feet in the air in a volcano-like fashion.
While some areas of land sank or slid, other areas heaved
upwards with a loud thundering sound unlike any I’d previously
heard. But worse of
all were the cries of horror and fear coming from those who
populated this land and my body still trembles as I recall these
scenes.
The
devastation and chaos I saw in the dreams is incredible and
these visions have prompted me to speak out.
My initial impression was that I was viewing west coast
activity where areas prone to liquefaction are known to exist.
However, my research has shown me that the New Madrid
fault zone is probably one of the world’s largest areas in
which ground failure such as liquefaction due to earth shaking
could take place.
The New
Madrid fault zone includes parts of Missouri, Tennessee,
Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, and Mississippi.
Within this area is a large liquefaction field that could
cause the kind of devastating upheavals described in my dreams
and it is the location of one of the most powerful earthquakes
in US history. This
area is also one of the least prepared for a catastrophic
earthquake event possibly because many people living in this
zone may not realize the kind of devastation that could take
place during a large earthquake.
In 1811 and
1812 the New Madrid experienced large quakes that leveled most
of the buildings within 250 miles, caused the Mississippi River
to recede and run backwards before changing direction to go
downstream in a huge wave.
Large areas of land either sank or rose up several feet,
new lakes and wetlands formed, over 150,000 acres of forests
were destroyed just to mention some of the devastation that
occurred.
Loss of
life then was minuscule compared to what it would be like today.
Estimates of loss would run in the billions of dollars
with literally thousands of buildings completely destroyed.
Loss of life could be in the hundreds of thousands.
The impact of such an event would be felt in nearly every
state east of the Rockies and would be one of, if not the worst
disaster in US history.
Many
geologists believe that it isn’t a matter of “if” a large
quake will take place; it’s a matter of “when” this could
happen. Only in
recent years has this area been looked at with technologies that
can provide studies to indicate possible effects.
In a study conducted by the Universities of Colorado and
Arkansas indicated that there is currently about “three feet
of elastic energy” that is stored in the fault.
And if this were to quake it would be an event in the 6.5
to 7.0 ranges, large enough to have an enormously devastating
effect on society.
In addition
to studying and monitoring this area, various organizations are
encouraging education directed at public awareness.
Maps where liquefaction is likely can be found on the
Internet as well as studies being conducted in specific areas of
interest where landslides and liquefaction have previously
occurred.
